Conservation of Howell’s Statue, The Museum of Cardiff

In July 2024, the Museum of Cardiff put Howell's statue—a historic four-foot-high plaster maquette—on display for the first time after completing conservation work. The javelin thrower statue was originally created as a prototype for the 60-foot sculpture that sat atop the Howell's building during the 1958 Empire Games in Cardiff. The conservation process included:

  • Completion of laser cleaning treatment of the plaster surface

  • Structural reinforcement of the ankles using epoxy resin filler

  • Installation of a stable lifting point and secure foundation using lightweight Hexlite Board

  • Application of Paraloid B72 to preserve vulnerable areas of the base and hands

  • Development of comprehensive handling guidelines for museum staff

  • Documentation of the conservation process through social media content
