Master’s Thesis

An investigation into the timeline and materials of decorative features and vernacular wall paintings within a Tudor Farmhouse in Somerset

Summer- Autumn 2024

For my Master's thesis, I examined and identified pigments in Tudor wall paintings and painted fireplaces using advanced analytical methods. Through SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence), and Raman spectroscopy, I analyzed both historical and modern decorative elements, successfully identifying various pigments and their binding media. This comprehensive analysis allowed me to navigate the conservation and interpretation of complex stratigraphies present on painted historic surfaces, combining my interest in pigment analysis with the study of decorative surfaces.

The project focused on a historic stone farmhouse located. The building had undergone various alterations and modernizations over the years, including accretions of cement and concrete, and was being 'retrieved' by its owners at the time. Preliminary explorations revealed several Tudor-arched fireplaces with evidence of different paint schemes and old plasters on the adjacent walls, providing rich material for analytical investigation.

This is an internationally significant collection, and this work will make the collection accessible for future research and documentation.

Finds Liaison Officer, Caer Heritage, Cardiff

June- July 2023

As a Finds Liaison Officer at a community-based archaeological dig in Ely, Cardiff, I worked closely with volunteers and students to manage various aspects of the excavation. I was responsible for maintaining the Small Finds Register, ensuring meticulous recording and cataloguing of all discoveries. My role included the careful accessioning and labeling of finds, implementing proper documentation and storage protocols throughout the project.

I performed essential conservation work, including cleaning treatments and the delicate task of excavating and lifting ceramic finds in-situ. A significant part of my role involved community engagement, where I shared the importance of archaeology and conservation with the public. This included organizing and conducting educational activities during school visits, helping to foster an appreciation for archaeological heritage among younger generations.
